THE PROJECT

BBC Two’s Springwatch is one of the UK’s favourite nature programmes, documenting how British wildlife adapts during the changing of the seasons across the country. The programme uses more than 50 cameras – many hidden and operated remotely – to capture the animals’ natural behaviour throughout the day and night.

Before moving to this year’s live broadcast location at the National Trust’s Sherborne Park Estate in the heart of the Cotswolds AONB in Gloucestershire, we helped install two Avid Media Composer systems at the BBC’s temporary facility in Bristol to pre-edit and index material before the production team moved to Sherborne.

Then, from mid-April 2018, we completed the onsite installation by setting up a total of 12 Avid Media Composer Symphony suites in Sherborne, along with Avid ISIS 5000 series storage engines, NEXIS, Interplay and a complete EVS workflow solution.

This setup would allow the 15+ editors and assistants to piece together footage from several days’ near-continuous filming, achieving stunning pictures of UK’s most spectacular wildlife through cleverly placed and fixed-rig cameras.

THE OUTCOME

Springwatch went live on 28 May 2018, with perennial hosts Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan on hand again to present the three-week series. The programme runs until 14 June, with 12 shows broadcast on BBC Two, as well as a number of ‘Wildlife Cams’ streaming footage online round the clock.

The addition of EVS integration and the use of IPDirector enables media that has been recorded in the OB truck to be sent to the Avid network for editing, and completed packages to be sent back to EVS for transmission.
