To buy or not to buy: The emergence of long-term kit rental as a way to flex to the latest tech

Ed Tischler, one of the UK directors here at Gravity Media, has spoken to leading broadcast and production publication Televisual about why more organisations should consider equipment rental when it comes to making the leap to the latest cutting edge technology. As the adoption of new ways of working as well as new technologies has never been more relevant than it is today, businesses can only evolve if they embrace innovation. To do so, Ed argues, they may have to consider a new approach to investing in the latest kit.

The long-term hiring of equipment is becoming increasingly attractive to those involved in the creation of content. This is because it helps organisations flex towards the latest technology and work within a broadcast space that ordinarily would be cost prohibitive. By using a specialist service, much of the evaluation work has already happened. Rental companies will have done their homework, and invested in what they are confident is going to deliver the best performance, and in turn, the best returns. If they have good relationships with the manufacturers, then they’ll probably have earlier access to these new tools as well, meaning the end users can get their hands on them sooner. When a newer model is released, or an alternative solution emerges, that rental agreement can be updated so that creative toolkits remain at the cutting edge.

With this approach, they don’t need to worry about falling behind as new technology emerges, whereas if they’d bought the equipment outright, they may still have several years left in which to sweat the asset in order to extract maximum return on that investment. And maintaining that kit is no longer an issue as the onus is on the rental house to ensure there is minimal disruption. This is why it’s important to select a rental partner with a large inventory of stock and a big geographical reach, so they can quickly respond to any issues, no matter the location.
