Formally the Australian Touring Car Championship, the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is one of Australia’s biggest sports. It delivers exhilarating and accessible motorsports-led entertainment to engaged and passionate fans.
The championship has expanded internationally and has become globally recognised as the best touring car category in the world. As a leader in motorsport entertainment, it has evolved from a single race in the 1960s to the sole domain of the legendary Holden vs Ford battle in 1995. It now currently consists of 16 rounds across Australia and New Zealand.
The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship saw over 80 hours of live coverage screened in 2017 on Network Ten alone. This included broadcasts across stations ONE, TEN and TEN HD for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and New Zealand. In addition to this, FOX SPORTS delivered every round of the championship live, including continuous footage of all qualifying sessions and races.
With so many eyes on the race in real time, its crucial that Supercars Media, the production arm of the supercars championship was able to facilitate all the broadcast and recording of the event. This included track coverage, studio and pit lane hostings, in-camera coverage, specialty cameras and graphics.
Supercars Media selected Gravity Media – then branded Gearhouse Broadcast – to provide all technical broadcast facilities at the race. One of the main reasons Supercars Media chose Gearhouse was its advanced technology and ability to deploy technical solutions for a number of areas that its competitors couldn’t.
Gravity Media worked closely with Supercars Media to identify what its needs were, and deployed a customised approach for the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. In addition to the additional broadcast offering originally required, Gravity Media was able to provide solutions for team radios, timing data from around the track and events communications that mean non-traditional could communicate with the broadcast teams.
Across the championship, Gravity Media’s production solutions were used to capture more than 80 hours of live coverage. Supercars Media was also able to deliver multiple technical solutions outside of its normal, traditional, broadcast offerings to further enhance its value to rights holders and fans.
