The US Open tennis is underway

The 2019 US Open is now firmly underway, with a number of seeds already falling in a tumultuous first round. Perhaps the biggest shock was 2017 Champion Sloane Stephens succumbing to 20-year-old qualifier Anna Kalinskaya, and on the men's side, fourth seed Dominic Thiem, eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 9 Karen Khachanov and No. 10 Roberto Bautista Agut were all sent packing after very short stays in New York.

Three and a half weeks before the Main Draw started on 26 August, a combined Gearhouse Broadcast UK and France team had been busy preparing Flushing Meadows to host the tournament, including full Host Broadcast facilities and technical support for the broadcaster’s domestic and international shows. Additional facilities were also rigged to cover the outer courts and the USTA Technical Operations Centre, ready for the Qualifiers that ran for a week from 19 August.

Getting everything set up and ready for the first day’s play required a full Gearhouse crew of 60 working onsite, installing, integrating and testing, the core Host Broadcast Facilities. Gearhouse’s sister company, HyperActive Broadcast has in addition supplied 14 Avid Media Composer suites along with Avid Interplay servers and storage, making the US Open a true Gravity Media endeavour.

Meanwhile, the Gearhouse Broadcast France team have additional responsibility to supply and support all the RF cams needed for the event, which is the 139th edition of the US Open, and the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year.

All eyes will now be on last year’s winners Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka, to see if they can withstand the various challenges from old hands and young upstarts alike.
