Gravity Media’s Production Centre in Manchester offers ‘at home’ and hybrid remote production and support services for live programmes and pre-records.

Located just 10 minutes’ walk from Manchester Piccadilly, the facility comprises a large, three-tier production gallery, sound control, two-person VO booth, two large edit suites and a dedicated production area. It is also connected directly to our Production Centre in London via our UK network, with access to all our London-based facilities and external connectivity partners.

Recent work
Recent projects delivered by the Production Centre, Manchester have featured graphics managed by our in-house team, editing based on robust Avid/EVS workflows, and IPDirector PAM to browse all project content.

For example, the teams in Manchester and London had a hand in every round of this year’s FA Cup, producing world feeds for rights holding broadcasters around the world, highlights action for The FA, and a variety of content for the BBC. Continuing the football theme, The Production Centre in Manchester was also used to put the finishing touches to BT Sport’s Behind The Dreams documentary, which is a collection of stories running from the preliminary rounds of the FA Cup to the semi-finals, profiling some of the characters taking part in the world’s oldest club competition.

No summary of work delivered by our team in Manchester would be complete without reference to their groundbreaking support to BBC Sport for the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Each match was presented live from pitch-side in France, whilst being produced remotely from Manchester and being fully supported by a technical team based at the Production Centre, London.

It was a hybrid remote production in which each match feed was taken in full from the host broadcaster, but the live presentation and pre- and post-match analysis were all handled at The Production Centre, Manchester. The at-home workflow involved the daisy-chaining of Gravity Media’s various UK facilities: the switcher, audio mixer and matrix were in London, linked to a bespoke gallery in Manchester where live camera feeds of the BBC presentation from France, sent by satellite, and the match feed, delivered by fibre, were switched.

With all feeds coming back to Manchester, we were able to produce content-rich replays and packages, along with in-game Piero-powered analysis, with reverse vision also being fed back to the platform presentation positions. A record UK TV audience of 11.7 million tuned in for the England v USA semi-final, and the show earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Sports Programme. Back of the net.
