What we do

Following a fully competitive international tendering process in 2010, broadcast solutions provider Gravity Media – then branded Gearhouse Broadcast – was selected to design, supply and install a major HD upgrade at Astro’s studio facilities in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian pay TV operator needed to be able to accommodate more HD productions. Utilised by both Astro and Astro Arena producers for a wide range of shows – including singing and dancing competitions, live music performances, game shows, talk shows and sport highlights – the upgrade needed to provide reliable, quality solutions with in-built flexibility.

What we used

The project involved upgrading four floors of studios, as well as three Production Control Rooms and a Central Equipment Area. Gravity Media’s Systems Integration team divided the project into two distinct phases. The first saw the technical upgrade and refurbishment of studios 1 & 2, incorporating associated Production Control Room and Audio Control Room areas.

The second phase was the technical upgrade and refurbishment of studios 3, 4, 5/6, 7 and their associated Control Rooms.

In terms of equipment chosen for the project, Gravity Media selected Snell Routers and Glue products, Harris Quads and Yamaha PM5D 64 Channel Analogue Consoles.

Snell’s range of routers are world renowned for quality and reliability.  Coupled with extremely flexible control operations, they cater for all sizes and operations – from simple edit suites to outside broadcast trucks.

Snell was also able to provide Astro and Gravity Media with 24/7 customer support within Asia, ensuring rapid diagnosis and resolution of any issues.

Outcome

The bespoke & flexible solutions devised and installed by Gravity Media gave Astro access to the latest and best in broadcasting technologies available at the time.

The state-of the-art HD digital broadcast facilities were the first of their kind to be installed in Malaysia.

Gravity Media specialists ensured the transition from ageing SD equipment to the very best in HD technology was smooth and efficient.

Astro’s capacity to broadcast in HD was significantly increased, which helped the network to achieve its goal of ‘placing Malaysia at the forefront of multimedia technology’.

Gravity Media has a proven track record in helping broadcasters make the transition from SD to HD.
